Snail Rattle

When your baby is bored of everything and you just need five calm minutes to finish your coffee, a simple toy with plenty to do is worth its weight in gold. This colourful snail rattle keeps little fingers busy. Shake it to hear the gentle rattle inside, slide the beads along the toy and turn it over to find the little character tucked into the shell.

The smooth curved bars give small hands several places to take hold, which matters a lot while a baby is still working out how to grip. Bright colours keep it interesting to look at, and at roughly 10.9 × 8.3 × 9.1 cm it is small enough for the nappy bag, so it is always there for waiting rooms and restaurants.

Choose a main colour of blue or yellow. The two top knobs come as a matching pair in a colour that may vary between yellow, orange, green and pink, and the smaller movable pieces may differ slightly from the photos.

Shake

Gently shake the toy so your baby hears the rattle inside, then pause and give them a moment to look for where the sound came from.

Hold

Place the toy in your baby's hands and let them take hold of the smooth curved bars. Holding with both hands is good practice at this stage, so it does not matter which bar they grab.

Slide the beads

Show them how the beads move, then let them push the beads along themselves during supervised play.

Find the character

Turn the shell towards your baby so they can spot the character inside, and name it for them as you play.

Pass from hand to hand

As coordination develops, encourage your baby to move the toy from one hand to the other, a skill many babies work on from around six to nine months.

6 to 9 months: Shake and explore

This is the strongest play stage. Your baby can shake the rattle on purpose, slide the beads and pass the toy between their hands.

9 to 18 months: Purposeful play

Your toddler may hold it more confidently, move the beads deliberately and name the colours and the character with you.
