Those first weeks can feel like a blur of feeding, rocking and wondering what on earth to play with a baby who mostly stares. The answer is simple: give them something worth staring at. High contrast black and white patterns are the easiest thing for a newborn’s developing eyes to pick out, which is why this chime works from the very beginning.

Clear rings full of colourful moving beads sit alongside dangling characters and shapes, with fabric tabs and mixed textures for extra interest. Cleaning

• Handle the toy gently: do not hit, throw or pull it forcefully
• Do not machine wash: if needed, wash gently by hand
• Air dry naturally and do not dry it with high heat
• Wipe small surface marks with a clean paper towel
• Allow it to dry completely before use or storage

Attach the ring securely to a compatible pram or play gym bar, then move the toy gently to catch your baby's attention. Encourage them to:

• Look at the contrasting patterns
• Watch the colourful beads slide and move
• Reach for the hanging characters
• Feel the different fabrics and textures
• Squeeze the soft bottom pieces to hear them squeak

For the first few months, simply holding it and moving it slowly from side to side is enough. Remove it before sleep and never leave it attached inside an unattended sleep space.

Mysa Baby SA recommendation: Best suited from birth to around 9 months, with the strongest play stage at roughly 2 to 7 months.

Birth to 3 months: Look and listen

Hold the toy or hang it securely where your baby can see it, but not directly over the face. At this age, play is mainly about looking at the patterns and listening when you gently move the toy. By around two months, many babies can look at a toy for a few seconds.

3 to 6 months: Bat and reach

Move the hanging pieces close enough for your baby to bat at them during supervised floor or play gym time. Around four months, babies may begin reaching, kicking towards toys and holding toys that are easy to grip.

6 to 9 months: Grasp and explore

Your baby may enjoy holding the rings, shaking the toy and moving pieces from side to side. By six months, many babies reach for toys they want, and by nine months they may move objects between their hands.

From 9 months

It may still be enjoyed as a supervised handheld toy. However, once your baby can pull strongly, crawl or stand, do not leave it hanging where they can become tangled or pull it down.
