Animal hanging play toy

In the early months your baby wants to look at everything, but most toys are either too big to hold or too loud and flashy for a brand new baby. This plush hanging animal gets the balance right. Bright colours and patterned fabrics give their eyes something to follow, a round mirror gives them a face to discover, and a gentle bead rattle sounds as the toy moves without being overwhelming.

Textured rings and shaped pieces give little hands somewhere to hold on, and fabric tags and mixed textures add details to find (babies are famously obsessed with tags). The large ring at the top lets you attach it to a secure point on the pram or play gym, so there is always something interesting within reach on walks and during floor time.

It stands roughly 33 cm tall, though this varies a little between styles, and it is made mainly from soft polyester fabric.

Cleaning

Look and listen

Hold the toy about 20 to 30 cm from your baby's face and move it slowly from side to side so they can follow the bright colours, the mirror and the animal face. Shake the bead rattle gently to add a soft sound.

Reach and bat

Attach the top ring securely to a suitable pram or play gym bar. Position the hanging pieces close enough for your baby to touch, but keep them away from the face and neck, then let them bat at the rings and watch them move.

Grasp and shake

Place the toy in your baby's hands during supervised floor play. Help them hold the rings, shake the rattle and feel the soft fabric.

Mirror play

Show your baby their reflection and point to their eyes, nose and smile while you name each one.

Texture play

Guide their hands over the plush fabric, the smooth rings and the textured shapes, using simple words such as “soft”, “bumpy” and “smooth”.

Tummy time play

Place the toy in front of your baby during tummy time. Shake it gently or turn the mirror towards them to encourage them to lift their head, look and reach.

Attach it securely, check every ring, seam and hanging part before use, and remove it from the cot or sleep space before every sleep.

Manufacturer guidance: 0+ months

Mysa Baby SA recommendation: Suitable from birth when an adult leads the play and best suited from about 3 to 10 months. It may stay useful after 10 months as a supervised handheld toy.

The 0+ guidance means the toy can be introduced from birth. It does not mean a newborn will use every feature straight away.

Birth to 3 months: Look and listen

Hold the toy, or hang it securely where your baby can see it but cannot pull it onto their face. Move the mirror or rattle gently so they can watch and listen. By around two months, many babies can look at a toy for several seconds.

3 to 6 months: Bat, reach and begin to hold

Place the hanging pieces close enough for your baby to touch during supervised, awake play. They may begin batting at the toy, holding a ring and looking at the mirror. By around four months, many babies can hold a toy placed in their hand and swing an arm towards toys.

6 to 10 months: Grasp, shake and explore

This is likely to be the strongest play stage. Your baby can hold the rings, shake the bead rattle, explore the mirror and investigate the textured pieces. By around six months, many babies reach for toys they want and explore objects with their mouths.

From 10 months

It may still be enjoyed as a supervised handheld toy. Older babies pull more strongly, so check the hanging ring and every attached part carefully. Stop hanging it once your baby can pull it down or wrap any part around their body.

Babies develop at different speeds, so treat this as a practical guide rather than a replacement for the manufacturer's 0+ guidance.

Adult supervision is required throughout play, and the toy is for awake play only.

Before every use, check that the hanging ring, stitching, seams, mirror, rattle and attached pieces are intact and securely connected. Do not use the toy if it is damaged or if any part becomes loose, cracked or torn.
