Tummy time is one of those things every parent is told to do and almost every baby protests about. Many of us end up feeling guilty, lying on the floor pulling faces to keep our baby interested. This book makes those few minutes a lot easier.

The soft cloth folds into a triangle that stands upright in front of your baby, so there is always something to look at right at their eye level. The mirror gives them a face to find, which is often what keeps a short session going a little longer. Unfold it and it opens out flat, so your baby can touch and explore it on the floor.

One side has bold high contrast patterns for the early weeks, and the other has colourful pictures for when your baby is ready for more detail, so it keeps up as they grow. A carry handle makes it easy to move from room to room, pack for a visit or store away. It is designed to support pattern recognition and hand and eye coordination.

Start with the mirror

Set the book up in its standing position and place the mirror in front of your baby during tummy time. Make faces, smile, point to their eyes and nose, or play simple peekaboo games together.

Explore the high contrast patterns

For younger babies, position the black and white panels within comfortable viewing distance. Move the book slowly from side to side and give your baby time to follow the patterns with their eyes.

Encourage reaching

Place the book slightly in front of or beside your baby so they can reach towards the different pictures and panels. Tap or point to a picture to draw their attention.

Discover the textures

Open the book out flat and let your baby touch, grab and explore the different fabric sections. Let them take their time on one surface rather than rushing between activities.

Talk about what you see

Point to the animals, shapes, colours and pictures and name them aloud. Try simple phrases such as “Can you see the panda?” or “Look at the red square.” As your baby grows, ask them to find familiar pictures.

Keep tummy time interesting

Change which side faces your baby from one session to the next, and move the book slightly to the left or right to encourage them to look, turn and reach in different directions.

Take it with you

Fold it back into its compact shape when playtime is over, so it moves easily between rooms or comes along for play away from home.

Birth to 2 months: Looking, led by you

Place the book upright nearby and let your baby look at the mirror and bold patterns while lying on their back or during brief, supervised tummy time. By around two months, many babies can look at a toy for several seconds and briefly hold their head up while on their tummy.

2 to 4 months: Early tummy time play

Position the panels slightly in front of your baby and alternate which side is visible. The mirror and patterns give them something to look towards while lifting or turning their head. By around four months, many babies push onto their elbows or forearms and begin swinging their arms towards toys.

4 to 6 months: Looking, reaching and touching

Move the book close enough for your baby to reach towards the panels and textured details. Reaching for a wanted toy and pushing up with straighter arms commonly emerge around six months.

6 to 9 months: Seated and floor play

Your baby may enjoy looking into the mirror, patting the panels and exploring the pictures while sitting with support or playing on the floor.

From 9 months

It may still be useful for pointing at pictures, naming objects and mirror play, though many babies begin preferring toys they can pick up and move around.

Safety information

Adult supervision is required throughout play, and the book is for awake play only.

Before every use, check that the fabric, seams, stitching, carry handle and mirror area are intact and securely connected. Stop using the product if any part becomes loose or damaged.
