This fold-out sensory book can be used in different ways as your baby grows. Set it up in its standing position during tummy time so the mirror and high-contrast panels are easy to see, or open it out flat for hands-on floor play.

• Start with the mirror: Place the mirror in front of your baby during tummy time and let them look at their reflection. Make funny faces, smile, point to their eyes and nose, or play simple peek-a-boo games together.
• Explore the high-contrast patterns: For younger babies, position the black-and-white panels within comfortable viewing distance. Slowly move the book from side to side and give your baby time to follow the patterns with their eyes.
• Encourage reaching: Place the book slightly in front of or beside your baby so they can reach towards the different pictures and panels. You can gently tap or point to a picture to attract their attention.
• Discover the textures: Open the book out and allow your baby to touch, grab and explore the different fabric sections. Let them take their time feeling the surfaces rather than rushing from one activity to the next.
• Talk about what you see: Point to the animals, shapes, colours and pictures and name them aloud. Try simple phrases such as “Can you see the panda?” or “Look at the red square.” As your baby grows, you can ask them to find familiar pictures.
• Make tummy time more interesting: Change which side faces your baby from one play session to the next. Place the book directly in front of them, then slightly to the left or right to encourage them to look, turn and reach in different directions.
• Use it for interactive play: Sit together and turn the panels into a little picture game. Point, name, copy sounds, count pictures or ask your baby to touch a particular image as they become more confident.
• Take it with you: Fold it back into its compact shape when playtime is finished, making it easy to move between rooms or take along for play away from home.
  

For younger babies, keep play simple with the mirror and high-contrast patterns. As they become more active, introduce more reaching, touching, picture finding and interactive games. Always supervise your baby during play.

0–2 months — caregiver-led looking: Place the mat upright nearby and let your baby look at the mirror and bold patterns while lying on their back or during brief, supervised tummy time. By around two months, many babies can look at a toy for several seconds and briefly hold their head up while on their tummy.

2–4 months — early tummy-time play: Position the panels slightly in front of your baby and alternate which side is visible. The mirror and patterns can give them something to look toward while lifting or turning their head. By around four months, many babies push onto their elbows or forearms and begin swinging their arms toward toys.

4–6 months — looking, reaching and touching: Move the mat close enough for your baby to reach toward the panels and textured details. Reaching for a wanted toy and pushing up with straighter arms commonly emerge around six months.

6–9 months — seated and floor play: Your baby may enjoy looking into the mirror, patting the panels and exploring the pictures while sitting with support or playing on the floor.

9–12 months — occasional continued use: It may still be useful for pointing at pictures, naming objects and mirror play, but many babies will begin preferring toys they can pick up, move and manipulate.
